Recent research by the pew research center on attitudes about the government's responsibility to help those in poverty revealed:

In July 2012, the Pew Research survey revealed that 71% of adults considered that if Mitt Romney were to be elected instead of Barack Obama, his policies would benefit rich people. Just 31% thought he would help poor people.

On the opposite side, 60% of the people considered that if Obama won for a second term, he would make possible the responsibility of the government to help the poor with his policies.

In that survey, 63% of the people expressed that the Republican Party favored wealthy people over the low classes.
