x<4 or x≥8

Write the interval notation for this compound inequality

x<4 . The value of x is less than 4. but not 4

We should not include 4 because there is no = sign in the inequality

4 is not included so we use parenthesis . x starts from 4 and goes to -infinity

x<4 the interval is (- ∞, 4)

x>=8 . The value of x is less than 4. Also x is equal to 8

We include 8 because there is = sign in the inequality

8 is included so we use square bracket . x starts from 8 and goes to infinity

x>=8 the interval is [8, ∞)

So interval notation is (- ∞, 4) U [8, ∞)
