The New Mexico and Colorado Volunteers were mostly poor, illiterate, Spanish-speaking men, aged 18 to 45. They came from from Las Vegas, Santa Fe, Taos, Mora, and Colorado villages. They had very little American military training, brought their own out of date guns and often could not communicate with each other.They were organized into 5 regiments composed of 5 to 10 companies with 80-100 men per infantry or cavalry company.
