What is surface tension and an example of surface tension

Surface tension is a film made by water and it's polar characteristic. Since water is polar, it tends to stick together. When something tries to break the surface of water, surface tension comes into play. Simply, surface tension is a sort of film that tries to prevent things from breaking the water's surface. An example would be water on a penny that domes instead of breaking or going flat.

Answer

Surface tension is the force that acts parallel along the surface of a liquid which in turn makes the surface of the liquid to behave like an elastic material.

Surface tension, as the name implies, acts on the surface of a liquid giving it some elastic properties; it is a product of the inherent properties of the molecules of the liquid.

For example, water possesses surface tension that is why when a pin or a needle is gently placed on the surface of water it floats. Surface tension also accounts for the fact that some insects can walk on water.
