President John Adam's Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798 were designed to increase citizenship requirements for non-US citizens (from 5 to 14 years) and also limited free speech rights to control and stop criticism against the government. These Acts also allowed the imprisonment and deportation of immigrants considered dangerous to the United States, or that had immigrated from nations considered hostile.
