The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is an agency embodied within the executive branch of the US goverment. Its own lemma reads: "Save lives, prevent injuries, reduce vehicle-related crashes."

NHTSA is in charge of writing and enforcing safety standards, gives the licenses to vehicle manufacturers and importers, organizes the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) system and provides information about car insurance services. Another of its major activities is NHTSA's major activities is the creation and maintenance of the data file.
