a player scored 96 points in a single professional basketball game. he made a total of 63 baskets, consisting of field goals(worth two points) and foul shots (worth one point). find the number of field goals and the number of foul shots that the player made

Explanation:

Let the number of field goals be
x


And let the number of foul shots be
y


Total number of shots = 63


Therefore,
x+y = 63.........(1)


Also, points for field shot is equal to 2

Total points earned by field shot
= 2x


Points for foul shot is equal to 1


Total point earned by foul shots
= 1y


As the total points are equal to 96



2x+y = 96.....(2)


Subtracting (1) from (2) we get



x = 33


Putting value of
x in equation (1) we get



33+y =63



y =63-33 = 30


Hence number of field goals are 33 and number of foul shots are 30
