The correct order is: 2 - 1 - 4 - 3

Those sentences are part of “Anthem”, a dystopian fiction written by Ayn Rand. She was a Russian author and wrote this book in 1937. In 1946 a revised version of “Anthem” was also published.

According to this version, this is how those sentences were originally written:

“(...) But he does not die. He awakens on the first day in the forest with a realization of freedom. There is no longer anyone to tell him what to do. The next day, he hears footsteps behind him. He hides in the bushes, but there is no need, for it is the Golden One. She had heard of his escape, because the whole city is speaking of it.”
