Answer:

There are several reasons behind the government's protectionism policy. But the most important is the fact to flourish and keep the local industries running. The reason that European government protects the growing of food with subsidies and avoid imports because it keeps the local industry running. And with the passage of time it could become mature. In case the imported supply cuts off, the local industry will be mature enough to fulfills the local needs.

European government protects the growth of food by giving subsidies, in the form of direct payments or tax credits, to the local farmers even though imported food would be a cheaper option for them.

The main reason behind this is to keep the farms running by encouraging the local farmers to produce more crops which will help them to expand their agricultural industry as well.

Another reason could be that they will have enough food if the imports are ever cut off.
