Hey there!!

Given equation :-

... 4y - ( y - 4 ) = -20

Let' re write this equation as :

... 4y -1 ( y - 4 ) = -20

Using the distributive property :

... 4y + ( -1 ) ( y ) + ( -1 ) ( -4 ) = -20

... 4y - y + 4 = -20

Combining like terms :

... 3y + 4 = -20

Subtracting 4 on both sides :

... 3y = -24

Dividing by 3 on both sides :

... y = -24/3

... y = -8

Hope my answer helps!!
