Turner Buckminster III is so unhappy with his family’s move from Boston to the small town of Phippsburg, Maine, that he wishes he could just “light out for the Territories” like Huckleberry Finn. Turner’s father, the Reverend Turner Buckminster II, has been called to minister at Phippsburg’s First Congregational Church, but young Turner finds the town quite inhospitable.

At the beginning of the story, Turner is upset and feels out of place because he has moved to a new town and does not fit in. Turner then meets Lizzie and he starts to feel at home with her on Malaga Island. Soon, Turner realizes that the town leader plan to force the people of Malaga Island to leave their homes. As the conflict carries on, Turner realizes that the town leaders are actually lying about the Malaga Island and his innocence begins to disappear as the journey continues.
