Answer:

\boxed{\boxed{\sf(11)/(8)=1(3)/(8) =1.375}}

Solution Steps:

______________________________

1.) Find the LCF of 8 and 4:

  • 8,4=8

- We do this because in order to add the fractions together, they have to have the same denominator. In this case you find the LCF, (Least Common Factor) of 8 and that turns into the denominator for both.

2.) Convert the fractions to have the same denominator:

  • (5)/(8)=(5)/(8)

  • (3)/(4)=(6)/(8)

-
(5)/(8) stays the same, but
(3)/(4) changes to
(6)/(8) because the LCF if 8, and to get to 8 we had to multiply 4 by 2. So since we multiplied the denominator, you must do the same to the numerator, hence why we went from 3 to 6.

3.) Add the numerators:

  • 5+6=11

- Since
(5)/(8) and
(6)/(8) have the same denominator, all you have to do is add the numerator.
