Both the speaker and Poe lost a woman that they loved named Lenore.

Edgar Allan Poe wrote this story as experience because he had a 19 year old wife he married I believe when he was in his 20's or 30's. She died due to a cancer and Edgar was lonely for the rest of his life he was also a drinker in his life.
