Alfred the Great (849-899) was king of Wessex (current English territory) during 871-899, after his three older brother had reigned before him.
He had to deal with the issue of the Viking invasions. After achieving the victory in the Battle of Eddington in 878, he made an agreement with the Viking leader, Guthrum, and created the so-called Danelaw in the North of England. This treaty gave rights to the Viking in the Northern lands but managed to expell vikings out of his territories, the Wessex kingdom.
