y = -x - 6

the equation of a line in ' slope- intercept form ' is

y = mx + c ( m is the slope and c the y-intercept )

y = - x is in this form with m = - 1 and c = 0

note that parallel lines have equal slopes thus

the partial equation is y = - x + c

To find c substitute ( - 8, 2 ) into the partial equation

2 = 8 + c ⇒ c = 2 - 8 = - 6

y = - x - 6 ← is the equation of the parallel line
