Let the cost of the computer be $

c
and the cost of the software be $

s
The total cost the business owner incurred was $

4000
This means that,

c + s = 4000 - - - (1)

We were given another information concerning the relationship between cost of the computer and that of the software.

That is, the computer costs 4 times the software.

Mathematically, we express this relation as,

c = 4s - - - (2)

Now, we substitute equation 2 into equation 1 to obtain,

4s + s = 4000

We simplify to get,

5s = 4000

Divide both sides by 5.

(5s)/(5) = (4000)/(5)

Simplify to obtain,

s = 800

Hence the cost of the software is $800
