A redox reaction takes place when aqueous chlorine is added to potassium iodide solution.

The equation for this reaction is:

Cl2(aq) + 2KI(aq) → I2 (aq) + 2KCl(aq)

The ionic equation is: 2K+ + 2I- + Cl2—→ 2K+ +2Cl- + I2

Since the potassium doesn’t change, it is dropped and the resulting equation, known as the essential ionic equation is:

2I- + Cl2 ——→ 2Cl- + I2

So, the K+ is present, but not shown since it is the same on both sides of the equation.
