Ancient Egyptians did. They were known to write on walls, and carve patterns, or hieroglyphics, into stone.
Hieroglyphs were invented in 3300 or 3200 BC they were used as a writing system for the Egyptians. Not much to know who created hieroglyphs but many Egyptians believe the god of writing "Thoth" created the hieroglyphs.
