Let's assume, total number of miles traveled after the first 0.5 mile are x.

For 0.1 mile, the cost is $0.30

0.1* 10 = 1 mile

Hence, for 10 miles, cost is

0.30* 10 = 3 dollars

Total amount incurred = $ 3.50 (fixed cost) + 3x (cost per mile) + 2( tip)

He gave a total of $ 15, hence

15=3.50+3x+2

9.5=3x

x=(95)/(30) =(19)/(6) miles

Total miles traveled =
(19)/(6) +(1)/(2) =
(11)/(3) miles

Answer:

(11)/(3) miles

Explanation:

Let the total miles traveled be x.

Now, for the first 0.5 miles total charge is = $3.50

Then, the remaining distance to be traveled
=(x-0.5) miles

For each additional 0.1 mile, the additional charge is $0.30

So, for
(x-0.5) miles, the total additional charge will be
=(0.3)/(0.1)(x-0.5) =3(x-0.5)

Then, including the $2 tip, the total fare will be
=3.50+3(x-0.5)+2

Now, given that total fare is $15, so,

3.50+3(x-0.5)+2=15\\3.50+3x-1.5+2=15\\3x+4=15\\3x=11\\x=(11)/(3)miles
