There were many aspects of Puritanism that were sympathetic to the idea of democracy. It is important to remember that one of the main reasons for the Puritans to migrate to America was because of religious persecution. Therefore, they were conscious of the dangers of authority. This made them more open to the idea of freedom, such as freedom of religion and freedom of speech. Moreover, their Christian ideals indicated that God believed all men to be equal. This is an important concept at the heart of democracy.
