As a member of the National Council of Women in Kenya, Wangari Maathai has promoted widespread tree planting. She was influenced by her childhood experiences in rural Kenya. There, she had witnessed forests being cleared and replaced by commercial plantations. This destroyed biodiversity and the capacity of forests to retain water. In an effort to stop deforestation, Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement in 1977. Over the next 30 years, the environmental organization mobilized women to plant 30 million trees.
