Pigs have 4 legs and chicken have 2 legs. If there are 24 heads and 80 legs, how many pigs and chickens are there?

Answer:

P = 16

C = 24-P = 8

Explanation:

Heads: P + C = 24

C = 24 - P

Legs: 4P + 2C = 80

Substitute, from heads: 4P + 2 (24 - P) = 80

4P + 48 - 2P = 80

2P = 32

P = 16

C = 24-P = 8

P + C = 16 + 8 = 24

4P + 2C = 4(16) + 2(8) = 64 + 16 = 80
