The answer is 35/9

You first would remove the parentheses

Next you see that there is a subtraction symbol and a negative symbol right beside each other. You cant have 2 negatives side by side, so you change the symbol to addition

The problem then looks like this: 5/9 + 3 1/3

To make the problem easier you change the mixed number (3 1/3) to an improper fraction which is 10/3

Because its 5/9 + 10/3 you multiply 10 and 3 and get 30, and you keep the LCD (least common denominator) which is 9

Finally you add 5 + 30 = 35 and have 9 as your denominator

35/9 or 3 8/9
