According to the Declaration of the Independence, signed in 1776, it says that the purpose of the government is to preserve people's natural rights. The government is given power by the consent of the people, that's why we live in a democracy. (a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives)
If the government abuses its power, the people should change it or even abolish it. The people can have different ways, always acting through their representatives, or making government know that they are not comfortable with how things are carried away.
