Theodore Canot (1804-1860) was a French-Italian who at age 22 joined the slave ship Aerostatica at Havana where he entered into the slave trade. As a result of his ambitious, intelligent and unscrupulous personality he became one of the most famous and successful slavers of the 19th century.

In contrast, Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) was American social reformer, who After escaping from slavery in Maryland, became a national leader of the abolitionist movement in Massachusetts and New York, gaining visibility as one of the most relevant, slavery abolitionist, writer and orator of the 19th century.
