Although many scholars may disagree Tolkien was considered the father of the fantasy genre.

He was a Professor of Old English and Middle English language and literature, and Beowulf, influenced his own writings.

Some influences:

  • In The Lord of the Rings, the ideas of heroism and masculinity that the character of Beowulf has, can also be seen in Aragorn.
  • Both Aragorn and Beowulf have "questionable" family lines.
  • Both of them became kings only for the good of the people
