Three unit's would be the numbers:

1, 2 and 3.

Any number you choose must be greater than 3 for example:

5, 8 or 10

Let x represent the numbers

The numbers more than 3 units means their distance from zero is more than 3

|x| > 3

This implies that either

x > 3

or

$\Rightarrow x < - 3$

The solution set is the inequality

$x < - 3 \: or \: x > 3$
