Let the shorter side be

x metres

The the longer longer side is

x +6meters

The perimeter is the distance around the figure.

44= x +x+ (x+6) + (x+6)

This implies that

44= x +x +x+x+6 + 6

44=4x+12

Group like terms

44-12=4x

32=4x

Divide both side by 4 to get

8=x

The longer side is

8+6=14 meters
