Apply the distance formula and find an expression for the distance between the points;

A(2,4) and B(-6,x)

Recall that the distance formula is given by,

d=\sqrt((x_2 - x_1 )^2 +(y_2 - y_1)^2

10=\sqrt((-6-2)^2 + (x-4)^2))

This implies that

10=\sqrt((-8)^2 + (x-4)^2))

10=\sqrt(64 + (x-4)^2))

Squaring both sides

100=64 + (x-4)^2

100-64=(x-4)^2

36=(x-4)^2

Taking square root of both sides gives

\sqrt(36)=(x-4)

6=(x-4)

6+4=x

x=10
