What does Atticus tell scout about his reasons for defending Tom?

Atticus told scout that since Tom is a black man, no one will defend him even if he is innocent and Atticus believes in equality so that is why he defends Tom Robinson because he believes that Tom is an innocent man. Hopefully this helps you :)

From what I remember... He believes that everyone is equal to each other and therefore just because Tom Robinson is black, doesn't mean that he should not defend him.
