Greece was bordered by the Mediterranean allowing for merchant ships to travel easily.
The Roman's had invaded which eliminated that option.
The multitude of greek islands allowed for more land and ports but was not the biggest contributor to its trade industry.
Greece contained valuable materials, but the access to the Mediterranean was more vital for trade.
