As seen in the image attached, we divide the body according to 3 planes: coronal, sagital and transverse.
We can state the relative position of 2 structures of the body according to these planes:
- In the coronal plane we say that something is ANTERIOR if it stands in front of this plane and POSTERIOR if it stands in the back
(eg. Your mouth is anterior to your back)
- In the sagittal plane we say something is MEDIAL if it stands closer to this plane and LATERAL if it stands away
(eg. You belly button is medial to your arm)
- In the transverse plane we say something is PROXIMAL or SUPERIOR if it stands above the plane and DISTAL or INFERIOR if it stands below it
(eg. Your fingers are distal to your elbow; Your feet are inferior to your head)
Additionally, we can state that something is SUPERFICIAL if it is closer to the skin to another.
(eg. Your epidermis is superficial to your dermis)
