The life cycle of both Pteridophytes and Fungi involves alternation of generations. This means that there is a diploid generation (the sporophyte, which produces spores) that is followed by a haploid generation (the gametophyte which produces gametes). Both generations in Pteridophytes are independent and free-living. In Fungi, all structures are haploid except the zygote.
