The fan cost index represents the cost of four average-price tickets, refreshments, and souvenirs to a sporting event. The FCIs for an independent golf league and an independent basketball league totaled $103.77. The basketball FCI was $9.73 more than that of golf. What were the FCIs for these sports?

The FCI for gold was $___
And the FCI for basketball was $ ___

This is a "sum and difference" problem, where the sum of the two FCIs is 103.77 and their difference is 9.73. The basketball FCI (the larger of the two) will be the average of these numbers:

... (103.77 +9.73)/2 = 113.50/2 = 56.75

Of course, the golf FCI is 9.73 less, so is 47.02.

The FCI for golf was $47.02.

And the FCI for basketball was $56.75.

_____

Let g and b represent the FCI values for golf and basketball. The equations describing the given relations are

  • b + g = 103.77
  • b - g = 9.73

When you add these two equations, you get

... 2b = 103.77 +9.73

... b = (103.77 +9.73)/2 . . . . . as above
