Prostitution was a central part of daily life in late 19th Century Paris and I think The study he did or why he wrote about woman and prostitutes focuses on these shifts between Antiquity and modernity in the evocations of women's bodies. The objective is to arrive at a poetics of modernity intimately bound to representations of women of the past and the present.

i hope this helps :0) cause im not sure.
