The last sentence contains an allusion to Seneca, a Roman philosopher, statesman and author born in what is now Cordoba, Spain (then part of the Roman province of Hispania).

Seneca is remembered because of his prolific work and because of his role as advisor to emperor Nero. He was accused of being part of a conspiracy to assassinate Nero, and forced to take his own life.
