What types of evidence support inferences about characters in a play?

There are two types of evidence -- direct and circumstantial. Direct evidence usually is that which speaks for itself: eyewitness accounts, a confession, or a weapon. I did not manage to find much of the supported text but I know that you can find the support at Prime Writings site.
