a climber starts to descend from 533 feet above sea level and keeps going until she reaches 10 feet below sea level how many feet did she descend

It's distance covered that's important here. 533 feet down to sea level is just that: 533 feet; if the climber continues descending, we add that additional descent to 533 ft, obtaining a total descent of 543 ft.
