Why is the phrase "it's just a theory" misleading

as scientist- you are taught to question Everything. you make a hypothesis and gather data that either proves the hypothesis to be true or refutes your hypothesis.

a theory is a deliberately tested and studied hypothesis pointing to a collection of data that proves a hypothesis to be true. (or remain unrefuted)


a theory isn't some random idea not backed by data.
