Solve y = x^2 + 2 for x:

1) Isolate x^2: x^2 = y - 2

2) Find the square root of this result: x = plus or minus √(y-2) (answer)

y = x^2 + 2

To solve for x we need to get x alone

y = x^2 + 2

To get x alone, we need to remove +2

subtract 2 on both sides

y-2= x^2 + 2-2

y-2 = x^2

Take square root on both sides

+-√(y-2) = x

We got x alone

x = +-√(y-2)
