In the scene that begins at time code 41:35 with Don and Kathy on the stage, what theatrical elements does Don add to the stage? How do these elements change the stage/scene? Which one do you think has the biggest impact? Why?

In the scene that begins at time code 41:35 with Don and Kathy on the stage, Don adds several theatrical elements to the stage; a sunset backdrop, some “mist from the distant mountains”, “colored lights in a garden”, “moonlight” (a spotlight), a balcony (ladder), “stardust” (more lights), and “a soft summer breeze” (a fan). These elements add interest and drama to the scene and give it more of a theatrical feeling. They also add a feeling of anticipation. While Don takes time to add these elements, both Kathy and the audience are waiting to see what Don has to say. I think while each element adds something to the scene, the ladder and lighting specifically have a large impact because (to me) they act as physical representations of Don and Kathy’s changing relationship and the obstacles that stand in their way. At the beginning of the song, Kathy is on the other side of the ladder (and higher up). As Don sings, he climbs up the ladder to meet her face to face. Then they both climb down the ladder. Now they're both on the same level but the ladder still stands between them as they each circle it. When they're almost together, Kathy goes to the other side of the ladder, they are now staring intently at each other but still have the ladder between them. Eventually, Kathy takes Don’s hand and they dance, no longer separated by the ladder. During the dance you see them dance together and apart and the lighting also serves as a visual representation of this. Sometimes Don is in the light and Kathy is in the dark (and visa versa). And sometimes they are both lit or in darkness together. At the end of the scene they are together on the same side of the ladder for a moment before returning to their original places, with the ladder between them (but this time Don is on the “balcony” and Kathy is on the ground. I think these elements serve as useful physical representations of Don and Kathy’s relationship as it changes.

I did this for an assignment and these are my thoughts, hope they help you :)

"The theatrical elements that Don adds to the stage are a backdrop of a “beautiful sunset”, “mist from the distant mountains” (fog machine), colored lights (that represented the moon light and other things) , a ladder as “her balcony”, a lot more lights, and a “soft summer breeze” (courtesy of the stage fan). These elements change the stage/scene because it makes the setting of the scene more meaningful and romantic. I think the lights have the biggest impact, because it has the spotlight on certain points. For example, around 44:34, when Kathy and Don start dancing into the different lights, the pinkish red lights add a more romantic feel to it, because red is the color of love and passion. So i feel like the lights had a big impact."
