A family’s cell phone contract charges a monthly fixed fee of $56 for five lines and then $0.08 per minute. The latest cell phone bill was $164 . How many minutes did the family use ? Write an equation to represent this situation . Then solve the equation .

if x equals the total minutes the family used then..

56 + .08x = 164
now to get x by itself..
subtract 56 from both sides

.08x = 108
divide both sides by .08

x = 1350
the family used a total of 1,350 minutes
