What general trend do you observe in the electronegativity values of the elements as you go from left to right on the table? Given the definition of electronegativity displayed on the table, explain this trend in electronegativity.

Answer:

In general, electronegativity values increase from left to right, excluding the noble gases (Group 18). We know that Group 1 elements easily lose electrons to reach a stable (noble gas) configuration. So it makes sense that they have low electronegativity values. Group 17 elements, on the other hand, easily attract electrons. Their high electronegativity values reflect this behavior.
