If the farm had a ratio of 3 chickens for every 8 eggs:

How many chickens would produce 40 eggs:

Ratio's : 3/8, 3 : 8

40/c = 3/8

Solution by Cross Multiplication For the equation:

40/c = 3/8

The cross product is

40 * 8 = c * 3

Solving for c

c = 40 * 8/3

Reducing:

c = 106.66666666667

Solution by Proportion

Since the equation is an equality If

40 ÷ 3 = 13.3333333333333

Then it is true that

c ÷ 8 = 13.33333333333

Solving for c

c = 8 * 13.333333333333

320/3

Answer c = 106.66666666667

Equation 2:

40/8 = 3/x

Solution by Cross Multiplication For the equation

40/8 = 3/ x

40/8 = 3x

The cross product is

40 * x = 8 * 3

40 * x = 8 * 3

Solving for x

x = 8 * 3/ 40

and reducing

x = 0.6

x = 0.6

Solution by Proportion

Since the equation is an equality If:

40 ÷ 3 = 13.333333333333

Then it is true that

8 ÷ x = 13.333333333333

Solving for x

x = 8 ÷ 13.333333333333

Answer x = 0.6

Hope that helps!!! : )
