The separation technique, Distillation is used to separate two compounds on the basis of difference in their boiling points. The compound with lowest boiling point will evaporate first, condensed first and separated first.

α-Naphthol is is an aromatic alcohol having a boiling point of 288 °C and is soluble in Acetone. Therefore, it is not possible to separate it from Acetone using filtration. Hence, the solution of α-Naphtho and Acetone is heated at 56 °C. Acetone with smaller boiling point (i.e. 56 °C) will evaporate first and collected in receiving flask while, α-Naphthol will remain in the heating flask. In this way the two compounds are separated efficiently.
