Remark.

The total is going to be a combination of the two fractions. That means add.

Solution

Change both fractions to improper fractions

3 3/4 = 15/4

8 2/3 = 26/3

==========================

Multiply the numerator and denominator of 15/4 by 3

(15)/(4) = (15*3)/(4*3) = (45)/(12)

Multiply the numerator and denominator of 26/3 by 4

(26)/(3) = (26*4)/(3*4)= (104)/(12)

Since the fractions have the same denominator (12), they can be added.

(104)/(12)+(45)/(12) =(149)/(12)

149/12 = 12 5/12 or 5.41667
