Developed from the 1950s through the 1970s, plate tectonics is the modern version of continental drift, a theory first proposed by scientist Alfred Wegener in 1912. Wegener didn't have an explanation for how continents could move around the planet, but researchers do now.

It was developed by Alfred Wegener around 1912-1915 time frame. He proposed his theory of the "continental drift". He proposed that the continents plowed through crust of ocean basins. He said that the continents look like a puzzle piece to put together. It's very interesting.

Hope this helped :)

have a great day
