Putnam's motivations for his actions in Salem are family honor and greed.

I believe the answer is: family honor and greed.

Putnam is angry that his relative was not hired as minister of Salem because of the Nurses. He felt that the nurses have cause his family disrespect in front of other people's perspective. On top of preventing the relatives getting the position, putnam also got in conflict with the nurses over ownership of a land.
