y = - 5x + 12

the equation of a line in ' slope- intercept form ' is

y = mx + c where m is the slope and c the y- intercept

rearrange 10x + 2y = - 2 into this form

2y = - 10x - 2 ⇒ y = - 5x -1 ( with m = - 5 )

note that parallel lines have equal slopes

Thus the slope of the parallel line is m = - 5

given the line passes through ( 0 , 12 ) then c = 12

equation of parallel line is y = - 5x + 12
