I believe the answer is: competed with native herbivores for food

Since the number of foods for herbivores are not increased, the rabbits would most likely compete with the native herbivores and won it. According to law of nature, rabbits have would most likely to pass their genetics compared to the native herbivores, which in long run would increase their overall number of population.
